Slingshot vs Can-Am Ryker and Spyder

Three wheelers get cross-shopped constantly, and we carry both sides of that argument in Sebring. The Polaris Slingshot puts two front wheels ahead of a single rear, and you sit in it side by side with a passenger, with a steering wheel, pedals and seat belts. The Can-Am Ryker and Spyder also have two wheels up front, but you straddle a seat and steer with handlebars, closer to a motorcycle.

That one difference decides most sales. People who want a car-like driving position and a passenger beside them, not behind them, lean toward the Slingshot. People who want to feel like they are riding, lean into corners in the saddle and carry luggage for touring, lean toward the Spyder RT or the lighter Ryker. Neither is the wrong answer.

Sit in the Slingshot, then sit on a Ryker and a Spyder, all within a few feet of each other. Most buyers know within ten minutes. We sell all three, so the advice is honest.

Polaris Slingshot® Service and Parts in Sebring

Our shop maintains and repairs the Slingshot on site: engine oil and filter service on the ProStar, rear drive belt inspection and replacement, brakes, tires and alignment, battery and charging checks, electrical and audio diagnosis, and warranty repairs.

The rear tire is the one to watch. It carries the power and wears faster than the fronts, so check it often, and keep all three at the right pressure because the Slingshot is sensitive to it. In a Highlands County summer, sun is the other enemy. Park in shade or use a cover, keep the seats and dash treated, and remember that a big audio system on a short trip can leave the battery low.

What to Know Before You Buy a Slingshot

Florida licensing and registration

Since July 1, 2018, Florida treats the Slingshot as an autocycle, and you can drive one with a valid standard driver license. No motorcycle endorsement is required. It still needs to be titled, registered and insured like any road vehicle, and we can help with the paperwork. Confirm current requirements with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Helmets and safety gear

Polaris recommends that the driver and passenger wear a DOT-approved helmet. Helmet requirements for autocycles are set by the state and can change, so confirm the current Florida rules with FLHSMV before your first drive. Eye protection matters too, because wind, bugs and road grit come straight into an open cockpit.

Manual or AutoDrive

The 5-speed manual is the purist's choice and it is a lot of fun on an empty two-lane road. AutoDrive removes the clutch pedal, which suits drivers who have not used a manual in years, couples who share the vehicle, and anyone who sits in traffic in town. AutoDrive can be equipped with paddle shifters, so you can still pick your own gears on an open road like SR 70 and let it shift itself back in town. Drive both. Most people know right away.

Living with an open cockpit in Florida

Summer afternoons in Highlands County often bring a thunderstorm. The Slingshot is open to the weather on most trims, so plan your drives, carry rain gear, and look at a roof or the Grand Touring's Slingshade if you plan to use it a lot. Sunscreen and good sunglasses are not optional.

Buying a used Slingshot

Check the rear tire and the drive belt, look for curb damage on the wheels, and check the undertray for scrapes from steep driveways. Ask for service records and confirm any open recalls have been done. Test every audio and screen function. Ask us what we checked and what has been replaced on any pre-owned unit.
